Googles Hidden Gem
There are hidden gems all over the internet. Some are remote and hidden websites that you just want to share on digg, but others are right under your nose. I found one last night on Google that seemed to (surprisingly) lack documentation.
Back in 2008 SBS (A public broadcaster in Australia) came up with a new slogan, Six Billion Stories and counting. While initially thinking it was just term that had the SBS acronym, I later came to realise that there were six billion people in the world which suddenly made this new slogan much more creative and brilliant.
While watching Myth busters last night I forgot the meaning of this new slogan and wasn’t sure if the world’s population was six or seven billion. I typed population of the earth into Google and got the usual one box, but the site it linked to was more interesting. It was part of Google, and called public data. It seems to have been around for about a year, but the information it contains is up to date and possibly useful.
According to this help page, you can get the following information. Google hasn’t provided links for this, insisting that we search for it and click on the one box, but I’ve managed to track down links and included them below:
- CO2 emissions per capita
- Energy use per capita
- Electricity consumption per capita
- Exports as percentage of GDP
- Fertility rate
- GNI per capita in PPP dollars
- Gross Domestic Product
- Gross National Income in PPP dollars
- GDP deflator change
- GDP growth rate
- Imports as percentage of GDP
- Internet users as percent of population
- Life expectancy
- Military expenditure as percentage of GDP
- Mortality rate, under 5
- Population
- Population growth rate

And even more interesting how China’s population growth rate (in per cent) is almost down to the same level as Finland’s.
Whoa, Greenland seems to be the most connected country. Interesting.
